Railroad Conductor

Job Description :
The Conductor operates track switches, couples and uncouples cars, and performs other duties
associated with moving trains, cars, and engines in rail yards. He or she receives, relays, or acts upon
oral, written, or radio instructions from the dispatcher, yardmaster, or other personnel indicating the
switch movement, placement, or delivery of railroad cars and/or a train.
The conductor is responsible for the safe and efficient administration of the train operations and
handling of customer freight following FRA and Company rules, policies, and regulations. All
necessary safety procedures, guidelines, and policies must be adhered to in the performance of the
tasks assigned to this position as set forth below.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand, and flag signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, or set or release air brakes
- Operate track switches, car doors, and air brakes
- Check and monitor the safety and security of cargo
- Maintain accurate records of cargo
- Inspect and maintain the condition of the train, track, and equipment
- Assist with loading and unloading cargo
- Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures
- Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid State Driver’s License
- FRA Conductor Certification
- 2 -3 years’ experience in Rail Transportation or other related industry experience
Skills:
- Knowledge of train systems and operations Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Effective communication skills
- Able to lift 50 pounds
- Able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Able to pass a background check and drug test, including random and post-accident testing per 49 CFR 219.
- Vision, color, and hearing acuity as specified in FRA regulations
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather including snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps; loud noise and fumes from gas, oil, and grease
- Work hours may be irregular and will vary in length and schedule. Work hours could include a non-standard work week, overtime, and potentially shiftwork including nights and weekends
- Exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and materials
