Railroad Engineer

Job Description :
The Railroad Engineer is responsible for operating a railcar mover safely on rail track within the limits
of Empire industrial property in Follansbee, West Virginia. Their job is to inspect the railcar mover
before use, operate the unit using manual and computer controls, and monitor the instruments such
as train speed, battery use, and air pressure.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform inspections on the railcar mover before and after runs
- Safely operate the train
- Identify obstructions and give warning signals at track crossings
- Monitor on-board meters and gauges including air pressure, battery charge, amperage, and train speed
- Communicate with traffic control concerning stops, oncoming trains, and delays
- Troubleshoot minor breakdowns
- Perform basic maintenance when required
- Complete daily reports
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid State Driver’s License
- FRA 240 certification preferred
- 2-3 years’ experience as a Railroad Engineer
Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical railcar mover systems
- Excellent diagnostic skills
- Basic mechanical skills
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Able to pass a background check and drug testing, including random and post-accident testing per 49 CFR 219.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather including snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps; loud noise and fumes from gas, oil, and grease
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
- Exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and materials
